Appleseed International
1999-2004
Appleseed International began Tuesday, October 19, 1999 in New York City’s Central Park. The travel project, Appleseed was a photo-based social experiment that included site visits to 40 cities. In Appleseed, 280 large format color transparency light boxes were produced and distributed to 20 U.S. and 20 international city parks for random passersby to find, keep, and respond to if they chose to do so.

Each artwork was placed in a democratic and unpremeditated manner in a public area for whomever to find. A letter written in the predominant local language, describing the project and inviting response accompanied each piece. The project's development was tracked through collecting the responses via traditional mail and online, creating maps, designing a project book and corresponding with finders. Appleseed International was designed to look at the function of a simple gesture in our rapidly changing world. A listing of included cities can be located after the presented images.

The following is a list of cities visited for Appleseed International: New York, NY; Joliet, IL; Indianapolis, IN; London, England; Cambridge, England; Minneapolis, MN; Milwaukee, WI; Columbus, OH; Pittsburgh, PA; Philadelphia, PA; Ann Arbor, MI; Detroit, MI; San Francisco, CA; Oakland, CA; Amsterdam, Holland; Utrecht, Holland; Brussels, Belgium; Paris, France; Edinburgh, Scotland; Manchester, England; Dublin, Ireland; Washington, DC; New Orleans, LA; Atlanta, GA; Las Vegas, NV; Legano, Switzerland; Venice, Italy; Florence, Italy; St. Louis, MO; Toronto, Canada; Ottawa, Canada; Montreal, Canada; Fort Myers, FL; Vancouver, Canada; Anchorage, AK; Nashville, TN; St. Petersburg, Russia; Helsinki, Finland; Stockholm, Sweden; and Copenhagen, Denmark.
